Post Bariatric Surgery Body Contouring: A Fast Growing Segment of Cosmetic Surgery

September 27th, 2008

:What is the most rapidly growing field in the plastic surgery medical sciences: The post bariatric body contour. This rising field of expertise and growing business segment is being driven by the success of the gastric bypass and lap band surgical weight loss procedures. These two surgical techniques accounted for a total of over 110,000 completed procedures in just the United States in the past 3 years. The proliferation of these weight loss surgical procedures has resulted in a very large post surgical population that has lost 100 to 150 pounds or more per individual. This weight loss typically takes place in about a 1 year period of time.
While the health benefits of these dramatic weight loss procedures is saving people’s lives who had suffered for years with morbid obesity- the cosmetic damage done to the body done by carrying very large amounts of weight is often difficult to reverse. During the weight gaining process the epidermis has been expanded, while the dermis has been stretched to the point of actually splitting. The result is permanent stretch marks. Upon completion of the weight loss afforded by gastric bypass or lap band surgery, the patient ends up with literally large amounts of loose and hanging skin. This is certainly not attractive and leaves a cosmetic flaw that affects the patients overall outlook on life despite having been successful at losing a large amount of weight.
The result is a growing number of specialized cosmetic physicians, clinics, spas and medical practices that are tailoring their expertise to tummy tucks, body lifts, thigh lifts, breast lifts, arm lifts and face lifts all designed to aid patients who have recently undergone a large weight loss. There is an entire movement of organized plastic surgery and medical companies that are gearing up to reach out and try and capture this growing market segment of their industry.

Chicago local cosmetic news- MetroMD now offers SmartLipo

September 23rd, 2008

MetroMD, a cosmetic medical practice in Chicago IL. announced via a press release its acquisition of the newly FDA approved SmartLipo Laser System. This revolutionary advance in liposuction technology allows for the permanent removal of unwanted and exercise resistant fat with little if any recovery down time. The procedure is safer and gentler than traditional liposuction and may be done in the office with only a local anesthetic. Common areas of treatment include: the abdomen, love handles, inner and outer thighs, neck and chin, knees, and upper arms. SmartLipo differs from traditional tumescent liposuction in that SmartLipo uses a small high powered laser to precisely sculpt the area being treated. Traditional liposuction uses high powered suction to remove fat cells, producing unwanted injury to tissues. The Smartlipo laser’s thermal energy produces a tightening effect on the overlying skin, thus reducing the need for additional invasive surgeries to remove excess skin. The entire procedure can take 1-2 hours to perform, and most patients exercise the next morning.

How does SmartLipo Laserlipolysis compare to traditional Liposuction ?

Local Anesthesia vs. General Anesthesia
Laser Liquified Fat vs Suctioning Semiliquid Fat
Thermal Skin Tightening vs. Erratic Skin Retraction
No stitches vs. stitches
Exercise the next morning vs. painful ambulation
2 week Lycra/spandex Garment vs. 6 weeks Painful Compression Garment
Complication rate of less than 1%

Traditional liposuction is the most commonly performed cosmetic medical procedure in the United States with over 325,000 cases performed each year according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Smartlipo takes the concepts of liposculpture to new levels with faster healing and tighter skin, says Edward Lack, MD, Medical Director for MetropolitanMD, Chicagos Cosmetic Surgery Center. The Smart Lipo Laser is manufactured by Cynosure Laser Inc., and is in extremely high demand. This new procedure has been featured in People magazine (”Has Fat Met Its Match?”), and on Good Morning America, the Today Show and Access Hollywood and is quickly becoming the next latest craze among aesthetic medicine and its exponentially increasing population of clientele.

Anna Nicole- a secret breast tape caper ?

September 21st, 2008

Does the saga of Anna ever end ? Several news agencies are reporting that the cosmetic surgeon who taped the late Anna Nicole Smith’s breast augmentation surgery is attempting to sell the tape to a memorabilia dealer. A judge issued a temporary restraining order against the release of the 1994 tape at the request of Howard K. Stern. The surgeon stated that he routinely records surgeries with the patient’s permission and promised to keep the video confidential “during the patient’s lifetime.”

It is actually a very common medical practice for the doctor to take before and after photos of surgery patients, and only use the photos with their consent. It’s a real tragedy if Anna’s trusted physician is indeed trying to exploit this very personal tape for financial gain.

Ann Coulter- Conservative author breast story angle ?

September 21st, 2008

Cityrag.com has photos appearing to show a breast augmentation for the often controversial conservative pundit and author Ann Coulter. Is it a bra or the real deal ?
If she’s had a breast augmentation, she has nice, modest size implants that take her from an A to a B. Then again, it could also just be a padded push-up bra from the often naughty, yet tasteful Victoria Secret.

Your bra and your breast enhancement procedure

September 7th, 2008

Yes- there is a connection:
Breast enhancement is one easy way to obtain immediate gratification to improve your self-confidence and image. Breast augmentation recovery involves the importance of resting, taking medication, not lifting weights or exercising, use of compression garment, and then a good bra. However, many people may not understand the importance of finding a post surgery bra that fits properly and gives you the correct amount of support.

Advantages to the Right Post Breast Surgery Bra
The right after breast augmentation bra does not only reduces swelling, but positions the breasts correctly on the chest, shortens recovery time, improves blood circulation, and helps to flush potentially harming body fluid to help maintain beautiful breasts. Alternatively, if you are not wearing suitable garment, you may end up with a backache, thinning skin on your breasts, and or sagging breast, and no women wants that!

Breast Augmentation Recovery Garments

Your bra size and type will vary throughout the healing process. In the beginning of recovery, you want to ensure you have the best support possible with the littlest amount of pain. Your plastic surgeon will advise compression garment. Compression garments assist in minimizing the throbbing sensation, discomfort, and pain. After your first week or so of breast augmentation surgery, another type of support garment may be suggested by your plastic surgeon and the final suggestion might be a sports bra. Sport bras firmly hold the breasts in place providing comfort, with a little less support then a compression garment, but still just enough. Soon enough you will be ready for a no under wire bra with less reinforcement.

Bra Selection for Breast Augmentation Patients is something you should discuss with your breast enhancement physician and post care nurse. Roberta Ramirez discussed her bra needs with her follow up nurse and found a wealth of information and brochures available.

Selecting the right bra is not always the easiest thing to do after a breast augmentation. However, it is possible. There are many factors that can help you in finding the bra that best fits your new breast augmentation look. When deciding on the right bra, you want to keep in mind not only the band and cup size determine if it is appropriate for you, but also the location of your breasts as they sit in the cup and how they are positioned. Additionally, bras with under wire should not to be worn sooner than about six weeks after your procedure and then on are only to be worn only occasionally.

Some background on breast reduction surgery

September 1st, 2008

Breast reduction, also known as Reduction Mammoplasty, accounts for over 78,000 procedures performed each year, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. This is a very significant number and represents women with larger breast sizes usually D cup or larger. The majority of patients are looking for a c cup bra which is usually the right cup size to alleviate pain associated with enlarged breasts, improve body proportions and offer complimentary appearance . Breast reduction surgery is offered to improve the patients quality of life.

Dr. Levin has found that individuals usually seek breast reduction because of medical conditions associated with enlarged breasts, including, back, neck and shoulders pain or discomfort. Other symptoms resulting from enlarged breasts are: shoulder indentations from wearing bras, discoloration of the skin, inframammary rash, kiposis, mastodynia (breast pain), and a psychological impact due to esthetic considerations. Some of these conditions often cause interference with daily life activities.

Breast reduction may be performed on patients 16 years of age or older. A significant breast reduction equates to excision of more than 500 gr (1 pound) of glandular tissue in each breast. Extreme cases involve an excision of 5 pounds or more. Typically breast reduction surgery is done under intra Venus sedation or General Anesthesia. In some cases, breast reduction can be accomplished under local anesthesia.

Breast incisions are typically located around the areolas and an inverted T incision under the areolas. Sometimes, the horizontal incision between the areolas and the infra mammary creases can be eliminated. The most popular technique involves inferiors or superior pedicels that preserve the blood supply to the breast and areolar tissues.

Breast reduction surgical outcomes are appreciated by over 90% of patients, regardless of the scar quality. The new look resulting from breast reduction surgery accentuates the natural feminine body curvatures and the comfort level for patients.

Many web sites are available to view before and after breast reduction photos so you can better understand what to expect. A qualified breast reduction doctor will also have a sampling of before and after photos for you to view at his office. When you decide to come in for a consultation, you’ll receive more detailed information about the procedure, invited to participate for screening to have the procedure and feel well equipped to make a decision about breast reduction.

The city, for much of its history, has been known informally as America’s “Second City.” It is currently ranked as the third-most populous city in the United States after New York and Los Angeles, with a population of nearly 3 million people. The Chicago metropolitan area (commonly referred to as Chicagoland) has a population of over 9.7 million people in Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana, making it also the third largest metropolitan area in the U.S. Adjacent to Lake Michigan, it is among the world’s twenty-five largest urban areas by population.

Incorporated as a city in 1837 after being founded in 1833 at the site of a portage between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River watershed, it soon became a major transportation hub in North America and quickly became the transportation, financial and industrial center of the American Midwest. Today the city’s attractions bring 44.2 million visitors annually.

Cosmetic surgery overseas- is it worth it ?

August 31st, 2008

For some people considering cosmetic surgery, it has been a common practice to combine an exotic vacation with cheap plastic surgery. The rarely publicized outcome of many such vacations is a botched procedure by a non board-certified, under-trained physician. Unfortunately, Rachel Styles found this out the hard way as do many patients who have traveled to abroad with the hopes of saving money on their surgery while recuperating in paradise have found the old saying “You Get What You Pay For” all too true!

Most foreign countries have lower medical standards and less quality control than the United States. While many patients have successful procedures in such countries, should there be a problem with the specific surgery, the outcome can be devastating and costly.

“In our practice, we’ve seen patients return from one of these trips with serious infections, horrible disfigurements and other life-threatening maladies,” said Dr. David Goldenberg, a cosmetic and re-constructive plastic surgeon at Advanced Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery in Ridgefield, CT. “Unfortunately, reversing and repairing these procedures can be extremely painful and cost the patient much more in terms of time and money than just seeking out a board certified doctor close to home from the onset.”

The most popular destinations by hospital statistics for cosmetic surgery tourism include Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Malaysia, Mexico, Philippines, Poland, South Africa, and Thailand. These destinations offer everything from “safari and surgery” to “tropical, scenic tour” vacation packages. Dr. Jacobson notes specific risks of such offshore offerings include:

· Vacation-related activities may compromise a patient’s health: Cosmetic surgery trips are marketed as vacations, but vacation activities should most definitely be avoided after surgery so that a patient can properly heal and reduce the possibility of complications

· Cosmetic surgery is real surgery: Every surgery, including cosmetic surgery, has some risks, which may increase when procedures are performed during cosmetic surgery vacations

· Travel combined with surgery significantly increases risk of complications: Traveling combined with surgery increase the risk of developing pulmonary embolism and blood clots and patients should wait five to seven days after body procedures such as liposuction and breast augmentation and seven to 10 days after cosmetic procedures of the face including facelifts, eyelid surgery, nose jobs, and laser treatments before traveling back home.

· Follow-up care and monitoring may be limited: Cosmetic surgery vacation packages provide limited follow-up care, if any, once the patient returns to the United States. Patients who have experienced a complication may find it hard to locate a qualified plastic surgeon to treat and correct the problem

· Bargain surgery can be costly: Patients can incur additional costs for revision surgeries and complications that may total more than the cost of the initial operation if originally performed in the United States

· Surgeon and facility qualifications may not be verifiable: Cosmetic surgery requires the proper administration of anesthesia, sterile technique, modern instrumentation and equipment, as well as, properly trained surgeons; many foreign facilities are privately owned and operated, making it difficult to check the credentials of surgeons, anesthesiologists and other medical personnel.

· Devices and products used may not meet U.S. safety standards: Cosmetic surgery products or devices used in other countries may not have been tested, proven safe and effective, or been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

Always consult a licensed medical doctor or practitioner before undergoing any medical procedure. Always verify the licensing and quality practices and reputation of any hospital, clinic or other facility that you may be considering using for a medical procedure to insure that you will receive the highest quality medical care available.
